Webcomics Round Up

It's been a very busy couple of weeks for the HIGH MOON posse, but we thought we'd take a few moments to spotlight some of the things that have caught our eye recently:

  • Andy Belanger, creator of Raising Hell, has debuted a brand new series on Zuda called Bottle of Awesome! It’s a whole lot of fun and worth checking out!

  • Like awesome Science-Fiction? Like brilliant characters and smart story telling? Sean Wang’s Runners may just be up your alley!

  • The talented Timony Twins have a new comic series called Minion Maze!

  • Cameron Stewart continues to unfold a dangerous tale of deception and betrayal in his semi-autobiographical series: Sin Titulo.

  • The crazy geniuses at Black Cherry Bombshells just recently hit their 100th page landmark! That’s 100 pages of off-the-hook zombie smashing action!

HIGH MOON VOL. 1 TP

Written by David Gallaher
Art and cover by Steve Ellis

The first winner of Zuda Comics’ monthly online competition, HIGH MOON is a horror adventure of cowboys and werewolves in the Old West. HIGH MOON begins with a gruff bounty hunter, Matthew Macgregor, investigating a series of strange happenings in the dusty town of Blest, Texas. While Macgregor seeks to uncover the town's dark secrets, he tries desperately to keep his own hidden.

The horrors of Blest ripple out to the mountainous town of Ragged Rock, Oklahoma, where another detective investigates a series of murders following a bizarre train robbery. Uncovering an age-old vendetta, this mysterious lawman is forced to do battle with a steam-driven monstrosity.

Macgregor's tale concludes as a young woman's dire call for assistance leads him through the Black Hills of South Dakota and into devastating battle between two warring factions. Macgregor must face down the United States government - only to discover a secret ritual that spells the destruction of the American frontier.

Celebrate #freecomicbookday with Webcomics!

Today is Free Comic Book Day!

Celebrate the event by visiting your local area comic shop - and by reading some webcomics!

Here are some great webcomics that we have previously suggested that are well-worth checking out:

Abominable Charles Christopher
– Follow the adventures of a dim-witted yeti through a forest full of colorful animal characters.

Black Cherry Bombshells – An ultra-violent girl gang fights for supremacy in a doomed future where all men have been mutated into flesh eating zombies.

Chicago 1968 – The Democratic National Convention has made its way to the Windy City. The Vietnam War has entered its bloodiest year … and with Abbie Hoffman in the picture, things are about to get really interesting!

Dorming – One of the gURL comix branded for teen girls. It’s pretty cute, and I dig the style.

Evil Inc – Brad Guigar’s long-running series about an evil, super villainous corporation.

Freak Angels – Warren Ellis has a TARDIS in his brain, really it’s the only explanation for how he can keep that sort of genius contained. Now, goes read his steampunk-thingie.

Ghost Pimp – The tales of a Divine Dolemite, Cootie Brown – a super-cool, super-smooth, murdered pimp living in heaven who is sent to earth by G-O-D!

High Moon – Our kick-ass werewolf western series!

Imaginary Boys – Join Elise on her magical escapades, exploring all the worlds between life and death with her pet Robert. Death is not the end… it’s just the beginning.

Jon Raymond is… IMPOSSIBLE – It is just one of the many fine adventure pieces you'll find at Action Age. Action Age is what happens when you let Chad Bowers, Chris Nye, and Chris Sims, the twisted mind responsible for the popular Invincible Super-Blog, create comics.

Kelly – Dan Goldman’s psychedelic fever dream, captured for your enjoyment.

Lore Brand – Although this strip has been retired, it’s well worth checking out as Lore Sjöberg remarks on topics trivial, mundane, and profound.

The Marvel – A captivating story about rocker scientist and occultist, Jack Parsons, the co-founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Next-Door Neighbor – For better, and more often for worse, we all have some crazy neighbor stories. New installments appear every other Monday. Enjoy!

Order of the Stick – As a table-top gamer, I find this medieval fantasy webcomic to be an accurate reflection of the patter that develops during our gaming sessions. See also: Knights of the Dinner Table.

Platinum Grit – Discover primitive magic and crazy adventures, as Jeremy and Nils encounter aliens, showgirls, succubi, and more.

Questionable Content – Looking for a slice-of-life comic to help you forget your troubles? Join Faye and the employees of the local coffee shop for some romantic melodrama and sexual humor.

Raising Hell – The tagline reads, “As much as they wished each other dead, their love refused to DIE!” That’s only the tip of the iceberg in this exceptionally well-rendered, EC Comics-inspired series.

Smash – Mix the humor of "Calvin & Hobbes" with the adventure of The Incredibles, and you’ll end up with something like this series!

Tiny Ghosts – A weekly photo-comic filled with robots, rag dolls, ballerinas, and melancholy humor. See also: A Softer World.

Ulysses Seen – James Joyce’s epic rendered in sequential form!

Vulcan and Vishnu – The travels and travails of two honest workmen devising their way around obstacles and through calamities on their way to fortune and glory.

Wondermark –Take 19th-century illustrations, change the context, create humorous juxtapositions, and you’ll get something like this strip.

xkcd – A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language, and a breakout hit over the last few years.

Yenny
– The adventures of YENNY recounts the day-to-day experiences of a girl who is trying to make it in the adult world, but in quite an out of the ordinary way.

Zuda – Apparently, there are some really great comics on this site, but this is the only one you really need to read in FULL SCREEN MODE!

What you were never meant to see ...

In the course of creating HIGH MOON, I tend to doodle quite a bit. These doodles help me break down my rather compliacted ideas into more manageable, bite-sized pieces. These doodles also help Steve Ellis understand exactly how I percieve a particular page.

Here are two such doodles from some pages of HIGH MOON created on my tablet PC:

So, when you see these pages online, I think you'll understand why I stick to writing.

Tristan Macgregor Spin-Off?

Over the last three weeks, I have gotten dozens e-mails in regards to a Tristan Macgregor / HIGH MOON spin-off series. The response to Tristan has simply been awesome - which is pretty rad. But, we've gotten so many requests that I thought I'd make this public announcement.

If you'd like to see Tristan in his own steampunk western spin-off series, send your request to feedback@zudacomics.com - and let your voice be heard.

Young Raven progression

For those of you hankering for more High Moon, I decided to let out a few more sketches of things. Here is the progression of how Young Raven came to be. The first sketches date back to almost a year ago.....

Young Raven is meant to be a Cherokee character, so she is dressed in a version of a Cherokee raven costume. As she developed, I wanted her to have the black shining eyes of a Raven. So black the light is sucked into them. They glimmer with light from reflection. It's amazing that so much research can be distilled into as simple images as these...

Appaloosa

I just saw the new Ed Harris film "Apaloosa" the other day. It was a pretty decent western, it had all of the prerequisite western tropes, but it had a much different take on the relationships of the characters. Clint Eastwood used to have the enigmatic "Man with No Name" thing, but this one has a name and has feelings. It's kinda weird watching two hired lawmen talking about their feelings....

Overall, I liked it and it gave me a lot of inspiration for details in the visuals for High Moon. I sat and took notes in the theatre from things like details of clothing to wallpaper textures to vegetation and other stuff that if you don't focus on a little tends to make your book seem less and less a period piece.

The devil is in those details...

HIGH MOON is OK

Literally.

Nerdage, NewsOK's blog of awesomeness, lends a hat tip to HIGH MOON's second season, which takes place in Ragged Rock, Oklahoma.

Nestled in the great Arbuckle Mountain Range, Ragged Rock is a largely self-sustained community created as part of the all-Black town movement in the post-Reconstruction era. As the nation's economy shifts agricultural to industrial, Ragged Rock is facing a change of its own.
